The River Lugg joins the Wye at Mordiford, with this bridge crossing the Lugg. Mordiford has an interesting legend about a resident dragon that terrorised local people when it came down from the hill above to drink at the river. A condemned criminal agreed to try to kill the dragon in return for a pardon. He lay in wait for it, hidden inside a cider barrel. After a great battle he did kill the dragon, but it also killed him with its poisonous dying breaths. There was an ancient painting of the dragon in the church, recorded in the 17th century, and the village still has a Serpent Lane.
