Chepstow Castle marks the beginning (or end) of the Wye Valley Walk. In the Castle Dell is a large boulder brought here from the source of the Wye high up in the mountains of Mid Wales. The Castle itself is believed to be the first stone-built castle to have been constructed in Wales, just a year after William the Conqueror’s victory over King Harold in 1066. The remains of the castle are substantial, and well worth a visit. The Castle was developed and extended throughout the Middle Ages and saw further action in and after the Civil War. The on-site exhibition tells the story of the castle, its various Lords and battle strategies and weapons through the ages.
