The plateau above the Wye between Monmouth and Chepstow has retained a number of traditional wildflower meadows. These small enclosures have not been intensively farmed, and have developed a very rich flora, including a range of orchids and other rare species. In turn, these support a wealth of insect life. The conservation of these special landscape features is helped by Gwent Wildlife Trust and the Monmouthshire Meadows Group in Monmouthshire and the Parish Grasslands Project in Gloucestershire. The groups hold an open day each June so that others can learn how to manage their land in a sympathetic way, and see an increasingly rare feature of our landscape.
