As the Wye Valley Walk follows the river for much of its length, walkers are very likely to spot a kingfisher. The sighting is most likely to be a flash of blue as it flies quickly up or down the river. Kingfishers nest in a hole in the riverbank and their breeding can be disrupted by flooding during the breeding season. They feed on small fish, and they can sometimes be seen on a favourite fishing perch waiting for a suitable time to dive for a meal.
